Greetings PageTurner.net Family and Friends!

We would like to offer our sincere condolences to the family of the great author Leslie Esdaile, who many of you know as L.A. Banks. Leslie's presence was "bigger than life" and if you ever met her, I am sure she gave you what she called a "big old Philly hug!"

Leslie will be missed by her family, friends, and fans. We celebrate her life, as heaven receives another angel.

The African American Literary Awards Show

There are a lot of exciting things happening in the African American Literary Community right now, and we would like to stop to congratulate our clients who have been name as honorees and nominees for the African American Literary Awards Show, which will be held September 22, 2011 in New York City.

The AALAS recognizes, honors, celebrates, and promotes the outstanding achievements and contributions that African-American authors and writers make to the publishing, arts and entertainment industries.

Our very own Eric Jerome Dickey will be recognized as a Honoree. Eric has been a part of the PageTurner.net family since 2000, and we are so proud that he is being recognized for his accomplishments in the literary world.

Welcome New Author Stacey L. Ford!

Stacey L. Ford became a novelist by chance. After numerous talks with her girlfriends about the lack of available, single, quality men, Stacey and her friends jokingly had conversations about their perceived options as single Black women between the ages of thirty-five and forty-five: lesbianism, celibacy or polyamory (multiple partner relationships). “None of these were viable options for me and my girlfriends, but the idea of man-sharing sure did stimulate a hot topic of discussion,” she says. The end-result was a manuscript titled, Selling the Fantasy, Stacey created to start a buzz about another alternative lifestyle that is starting to surface in African American communities.

“Black people are testing out so many different lifestyles that five or ten years ago would have been considered taboo, such as bisexuality, swinging and polyamory. The idea of two women sharing one man, unfortunately, is not a new concept, but with poly-relationships at least women can make the conscious decision if they want to participate, rather than finding out there is another woman across town,” she says.

Selling the Fantasy allows readers to peer into the life of a typical, single, Black woman and the tough decisions she must make if she wants to have the man of her dreams. It also compels women to contemplate the question, “Could I live this lifestyle if done correctly?” Stacey describes the novel as a compelling mixture of humor, romance, erotica and betrayal.

Stacey is a native of Oakland, California. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from UCLA and an MBA in Marketing from California State University, East Bay. She is a contributing writer for The Mirror Weekly Observer newspaper in Shreveport, Louisiana and a member of the National Black MBA Association. Stacey currently lives with her son in Northwest Louisiana, but has her eyes set on Dallas, Texas. She is presently hard at work on her next novel.

New Author Spotlight: Monica L. Jones

Monica L. Jones was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. At the age of six she witnessed the stage production of The Wiz, which sparked a love and appreciation for the Arts. Monica wrote and submitted a script for a popular situation comedy at the age of fourteen. She would later learn that her story would not be utilized, only to watch an episode that strongly resembled the script she submitted months before. Nevertheless, she realized her desire for writing, developing and telling stories.

Monica attended Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan where she received her Bachelor of Arts Degree. For a year she attended Howard University to where she studied Film and also studied drama under Al Freeman Jr. (Elijah Muhammed in the film Malcolm X). Years later she returned to Oakland University where she acquired a Masters of Education. Monica simultaneously attended Eastern Michigan University where she received a Master of Arts in Guidance and Counseling. She is a member of the American School Counselor Association and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

What began as a “temporary” job as a substitute teacher, lead to a career in Education for more than ten years. Eight and a half of those years were spent as an English Teacher at Cass Technical High School in Detroit, Michigan. Currently Monica is an Academic Advisor/ Counselor at Oak Park High School in Oak Park, Michigan.

Monica has never lost her love for writing and the Arts. Years after an exceedingly long hiatus, she has come full circle. Better Late Than Never is her first novel.

New Yorker Victoria Christopher Murray to receive Phillis Wheatley Award

Popular writer Victoria Christopher-Murray will receive the 2006 Phillis Wheatley
Award for excellence in contemporary fiction at the kickoff reception of the 8th annual Harlem Book Fair on Friday.

Christopher-Murray, a native of Queens, is the author of six Christian-based fiction novels. She is currently on tour to promote her latest novel, A Sin and A Shame, that was released nationally last month. For Christopher Murray, receiving the award is perhaps one of the major highlights of her literary career.

“I’m so excited about this opportunity,” she said recently in a recent interview with the Amsterdam News. “I’m honored to be in the company of so many wonderful people.”
Christopher Murray , who holds an MBA from New York University, spent more than 10 years working in Corporate America before eventually starting her own financial services business. She self-published her first book, Temptation in 1997. The book was eventually picked up and published by Warner Books.

“I didn’t even know that Christian fiction existed,” she said. “I knew that I wanted to write a book that was entertaining, compelling and put God in the middle and still have the book be a page-turner.”

Since those early days, Christopher-Murray’s books have regularly earned her a spot on Essence magazine’s bestseller’s list and garnered her a nomination for a 2001 NAACP Image Award.

The Wheatley Book award was established to recognize literary excellence and achievement that transcends culture, boundary and perception, according to Max Rodriguez, the former publisher of QBR—The Quarterly Black Book Review and an organizer of the Harlem Book Fair. Past recipients include, Dr. Maya Angelou, Maryse Conde, Carol Jenkins and Haki Madhubuti. In addition to Christopher-Murray, this year’s honorees include, Walter Dean Myers, author of the 1993 biography of Malcolm X; Omar Tyree, the outspoken and acerbic author of 13 books that focus on urban hip-hop culture; Chester Higgins, a photojournalist, whose works have appeared in the New York Times, Black Enterprise and Art News and Jan Carew, an educator and author whose works entwine some of his experiences as an educator and author in Europe, Guyana and the U.S.

Christopher-Murray will receive her award Friday night at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in Harlem between 7-9 p.m. She will meet fans and autograph copies of her books after the event.

Well, summer is here and it is HOT here in Texas! We hope your 4th of July includes friends, family, barbeque, homemade ice cream, watermelon, "red soda water" and all the things that bring back your favorite childhood memories. And since you have an extra few days off, I hope that you have picked up a great book to sit and read while you relax.

What's on my night stand? I am currently reading Baggage Claim by David Talbert, The Reckoning by Jeff Long, and listening to The Artifact by Patrick Astre. For you Techies out there I am also reading Macromedia Flash Professional 8 Beyond the Basics Hands-On Training. My next planned read is Three Sides to Every Story by Clarence Nero.

Last Month our book club, The Good Book Club Houston, was featured on the Bookclub In Your Pocket Show, a podcast presented by Tricom. We discussed George Elliott Clarke's "George & Rue" with the author. Be sure to check it out (you don't have to have an iPod, you can listen to it on your PC.)

The Octavia E. Butler Memorial Scholarship will enable writers of color to attend one of the Clarion writing workshops, where Octavia got her start. It is meant to cement Octavia's legacy by providing the same experience/opportunity that Octavia had to future generations of new writers of color. In addition to her stint as a student at the original Clarion Writers Workshop in Pennsylvania in 1970, Octavia taught several times for Clarion West in Seattle, Washington, and Clarion in East Lansing, Michigan, giving generously of her time to a cause she believed in.
The first Octavia E. Butler Memorial Scholarship will be awarded in 2007. We'll announce details of the application process later this year.

We hope that you are ready for summer, and to relax and read some great books! There are some hot new releases available for all of your exquisite literary tastes. Watch out for some new steamy summer releases that are bound to keep you up turning pages all night!

What's on my night stand? Well, I just finished Changing Faces by Kimberla Lawson Roby, and When a Sistah's Fed Up by Monica "Dr Moe" Frazier Anderson.
I am currently reading Just Short of Crazy by Nina Foxx and listening too (yep I do audio books also) Dean Koontz's Frankenstein, Book Two: City of Night. For you Techies out there I am also reading Head First HTML with CSS & XHTML. My next read is Baby Brother's Blues by Pearl Cleage (Good Book Club June Selection).

As I mentioned before, I listen to a lot of audio books (on my new IPOD that my husband gave me this past Christmas.) If you are into IPods or MP3 players, you are going to love the Podcast show "Authors In Your Pocket." Each week, they bring you a new interview with some on the country's top authors. Last week's interview was with PageTurner.net author Evie Rhodes, author of Criss Cross.

And last, but certainly not least I hope to see some of you next month at the Black Writers Reunion and Conference in Dallas, TX. I will have the pleasure to presenting a workshop titled "Put Your Best Foot Forward," or as I affectionately refer to as "everything you wanted to know about web sites but were afraid to ask" :-) If you are planning to attend, please stop by and say hi!

New York, New York, it's a wonderful town! It is also the host city for the seventh annual African American Book Club Summit (AABCS.) For the first time ever, the AABCS will depart from the east coast, bringing this literary adventure to a new group of book lovers. On Sunday, October 15, 2006, the AABCS will set sail from New York Harbor on the fabulous Royal Caribbean Explorer of the Seas for the exotic port of Kings Wharf, Bermuda.

The Explorer of the Seas has everything from a rock-climbing wall to an ice-skating rink. Sports and fitness offerings include a full basketball/volleyball court, golf simulator, jogging track, rock-climbing wall, in-line skating track, nine-hole miniature golf course, and a top-of-the-line fitness center and spa.
