After all, everyone in New Orleans' Ninth Ward knows she was born with a caul, that she talks to ghosts, and that she has grown up with Mama Ya-ya, who sees the future. Lanesha doesn't let herself mind too much; she still has her beloved school, where she can work out math problems, and she has Mama Ya-ya, who has always loved her. But when the TV newscasters begin talking about Hurricane Katrina, Lanesha begins to get worried. Mama Ya-ya is talking strangely, asking for Lanesha's support instead of the other way around. And when the waters begin rising, Lanesha realizes that she will need to band together with a couple of other outsiders in order to help as many people as possible to get out of the Ninth Ward.

To adult readers, Hurricane Katrina may not be ready to be classified as the makings of historical fiction. To preteen and teenage readers, the setting will be just old enough to feel familiar and manageable, yet just recent enough to feel important and relevant. Readers of all ages will appreciate the skill with which Rhodes uses a flood of Biblical proportions as a backdrop for a character with grace, intelligence, and foresight to develop a sense of her own dignity and strength. Lanesha's shifts between the recognizable world of schoolyard power struggles and the magical world of ghosts, math problems, and poetry are seamless, believable, and beautiful. This rich novel provides something for readers with a variety of interests to enjoy and to think about.
Naomi Lesley ©2010 Parents' Choice

Praise for Ninth Ward

"An absolutely exquisite children’s debut by Jewell Parker Rhodes. Ford became a novelist by chance. After numerous talks with her girlfriends about the lack of available, single, quality men, Stacey and her friends jokingly had conversations about their perceived options as single Black women between the ages of thirty-five and forty-five: lesbianism, celibacy or polyamory (multiple partner relationships). “None of these were viable options for me and my girlfriends, but the idea of man-sharing sure did stimulate a hot topic of discussion,” she says. The end-result was a manuscript titled, Selling the Fantasy, Stacey created to start a buzz about another alternative lifestyle that is starting to surface in African American communities.

“Black people are testing out so many different lifestyles that five or ten years ago would have been considered taboo, such as bisexuality, swinging and polyamory. The idea of two women sharing one man, unfortunately, is not a new concept, but with poly-relationships at least women can make the conscious decision if they want to participate, rather than finding out there is another woman across town,” she says.

Selling the Fantasy allows readers to peer into the life of a typical, single, Black woman and the tough decisions she must make if she wants to have the man of her dreams. It also compels women to contemplate the question, “Could I live this lifestyle if done correctly?” Stacey describes the novel as a compelling mixture of humor, romance, erotica and betrayal.

Stacey is a native of Oakland, California. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from UCLA and an MBA in Marketing from California State University, East Bay. She is a contributing writer for The Mirror Weekly Observer newspaper in Shreveport, Louisiana and a member of the National Black MBA Association. Stacey currently lives with her son in Northwest Louisiana, but has her eyes set on Dallas, Texas. She is presently hard at work on her next novel.

Visit Stacey's New Web Site at: http://www.staceylford.com

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://authorplace.blogspot.com/2007/08/welcome-new-author-stacey-l-ford.html' title='Welcome New Author Stacey L. What she doesn't know is that when her husband finally returns, she'll have some tough decisions to make if she wants to save her soul and salvage her marriage.

Ladies' Night Out by Electa Rome Parks

Electa Rome Parks-acclaimed author of Almost Doesn't Count, The Ties that Bind, and Loose Ends-now explores the bonds among four women and the secret confessions that could put their friendship at risk.

Lexie, Meshell, Tonya, and Tracee are single and successful best friends. Devoted to each other since college, they've bonded over a monthly ritual to regroup and keep it real. With a little wine, drama, and laughs, they discuss their dreams, betrayals, families, and without a doubt, the men in their lives that come and go. But tonight, ladies' night out arrives with a twist- and a revelation that could threaten a longstanding friendship or bring four women closer to understanding themselves, their men, and their secret passions than ever before.

Grown And Sexy by Phillip Thomas Duck

In this explosive follow-up to his powerful debut novel, Phillip Thomas Duck tells the tale of an edgy ex-con turned minister who tries to escape his past—and discovers that God truly does work in mysterious ways… LeVar Path went into North Carolina’s Jeremiah Correctional Institution a guilty, angry, dangerous man. Two and a half years later, he’s come out a repentant and born again. And it’s a good thing, because LeVar is about to face all kinds of trials, not to mention temptations. While LeVar is looking for God, a notorious band of murderous brothers is looking for him, eager to avenge a crime they don’t believe he’s quite paid for.

Fleeing to New Jersey, LeVar hears that Fellowship Baptist Church is looking for an associate pastor, and he decides to risk it and apply for the job. The Lord saved his soul in prison, maybe He will shelter his body in the church. And maybe along with His love, LeVar will be blessed with the love of a good woman. For even a man of God is still a man. Faithful yes, but temptation is all around for a man who's grown...and sexy.

Soon enough, LeVar finds himself enjoying the role of pastor, and is strongly attracted to a member of his congregation—a woman who also happens to be his harshest critic. Denied by her, he moves on to another woman that challenges his sexual restraint. But that is just the beginning of a road that will lead LeVar and those whose lives he touches through a tangle of betrayal, long-buried secrets, desires. . .and hopefully redemption.

Coming Soon

April 10, 2007: Sleeping with Strangers by Eric Jerome Dickey

May 1, 2007: Intimate Betrayal by Recha G. Peay

Congratulations to Our October Essence® Best-Sellers!

Fiction - Hardcover

#1. Chasing Destiny by Eric Jerome Dickey (Dutton, $24.95)
#4. Changing Faces by Kimberla Lawson Roby (William Morrow, $23.95)

Fiction - Paperback

#4. Any Rich Man Will Do by Francis Ray (St. Martin’s Griffin, $13.95)
#8. A Sin and a Shame by Victoria Christopher Murray (Touchstone, $14)

Go Kim! She is currently on tour to promote her latest novel, A Sin and A Shame, that was released nationally last month. For Christopher Murray, receiving the award is perhaps one of the major highlights of her literary career.

“I’m so excited about this opportunity,” she said recently in a recent interview with the Amsterdam News. “I’m honored to be in the company of so many wonderful people.”
Christopher Murray , who holds an MBA from New York University, spent more than 10 years working in Corporate America before eventually starting her own financial services business. She self-published her first book, Temptation in 1997. I will have the pleasure to presenting a workshop titled "Put Your Best Foot Forward," or as I affectionately refer to as "everything you wanted to know about web sites but were afraid to ask" :-) If you are planning to attend, please stop by and say hi!

That's all for now, I have books to read and web sites to build!

Have a safe and prosperous month,

Pam

Click Here for the June Newsletter: http://www.pageturner.net/news2006/june2006.html

Congratulations June Best-sellers!!!

June 2006 And an unforgettable female narrator rides her sexy yellow motorcycle right through it all.

Billie (aka "Ducati") is known as much for her extraordinary beauty as for the sexy yellow motorcycle she rides through the mean streets of Los Angeles. Tough, talented, and self-assured, Billie's used to doing things her way—but that was before love threw an oil slick in the road and spun her life into chaos.

Billie's first problem is simple: she's pregnant.

Her second problem is that her lover, Keith, is still married.

Keith has some "things" to deal with, and the people in his life are dark and duplicitous enough to take matters into their own hands, determined to keep Billie from having her baby. Billie suddenly finds herself confronted, attacked, run off highways, threatened and shadowed. Keith still has ties to his manipulative wife, Carmen, and he adores his fifteen-year-old daughter Destiny. Will he do the right thing by his new family, or stand by his old one?

Soon all eyes shift as everyone finds themselves desperately chasing Destiny, a troubled and deceptive girl dancing on the edge of womanhood. When the rubber meets the road, everyone's fighting dirty for what they want...and they're all willing to destroy their enemy or go down in flames to get it.

New Literary Forum

Black Writers Reunion & Conference & Black Writers United organizers have just launched a new forum for Black writers and writers of African-American literature, drama, poetry, and more at http://blackwriters.org/smf/index.php.

In addition to the boards visible to guests (Black Writers Reunion & Conference, MarketBoard, Blogs, Events, & Books), registered users have access to boards on the craft of writing fiction, nonfiction, and poetry; publishing; self-publishing; literary services; and freelance and career writing opportunities, to name a few. Make me Hot is Morgan Bayley's swan story as she experiences living with an unusually large nose for her entire life, until she wins a makeover contest. In her quest to be "hot" she faces some challenges regarding her extreme makeover that change her life forever. Is true happiness found on the other side of a nip-tuck, or does true beauty come from the inside out?

I'd like to meet you as I tour to Atlanta, Dallas, D.C./Maryland, Philadelphia, Little Rock, Charlotte and Columbia, Detroit, and L.A. Please check my tour page on my website for dates - http://marissamonteilh.com/tour.htm

As an author, I wanted to take a moment to stress the importance of buying and ordering titles early. The first few weeks are critical for a new book. Please get yours early and send the publishers the message that yes, you do read and you do love books, especially books with drama, and with characters that you can relate to. I strive to improve with each title, and I work hard to incorporate all that I've learned about the wonderful craft of writing.

If you happen to find that Make Me Hot is not available, as in sold out or simply not in stock, please ask your bookseller to order it and contact you once it comes in. If you choose to order online, Make Me Hot is available at http://www.blackimages.com/ or http://www.amazon.com/, as well as other online sites.

A Make Me Hot chapter except and synopsis are available on my website (below). Please check out my other titles as well. And once you've read Make Me Hot, feel free to post a review online or contact me via email, or sign my guestbook. I'd love to hear from you.

Thank you again for your support over the years! And stay tuned for my January 2007 book titled Dr. Feelgood. On Sunday, October 15, 2006, the AABCS will set sail from New York Harbor on the fabulous Royal Caribbean Explorer of the Seas for the exotic port of Kings Wharf, Bermuda.

The Explorer of the Seas has everything from a rock-climbing wall to an ice-skating rink. Sports and fitness offerings include a full basketball/volleyball court, golf simulator, jogging track, rock-climbing wall, in-line skating track, nine-hole miniature golf course, and a top-of-the-line fitness center and spa. Staterooms offer enhanced decor that strikes a nice balance of comfort and elegance. Bright colors and innovative touches create a welcoming atmosphere. Most staterooms offer a view of either the ocean or the action along the ship's own Royal Promenade.

This literary oasis recently returned from their 6th Annual Event (October 2005), which departed from Long Beach, California for ports along the Mexican Riviera. Featured authors on this voyage included Eric Jerome Dickey, Bernice McFadden, Travis Hunter; Mary Monroe; Nina Foxx; Victoria Christopher-Murray and ReShonda Tate-Billingsley.

Native New Yorker, Stefanie Preston took first place honors in the annual Short Story Contest. The contest was open to all registered participants of the Cruise (with the exception of the featured authors). The winners were announced during the cruise.

Founded in 2000, the AABCS has received national recognition as being one of the country’s most unique literary events. It has been featured in Essence Magazine; Ebony Magazine; Black Issues Book Review and Book Magazine; and Upscale Magazine. It is an excellent opportunity for book clubs and avid readers to gather, discuss books, exchange ideas, develop strategies, and meet some of the country's finest authors.

Readers get the opportunity to meet and greet their favorite authors as well as meet new up and coming authors during workshops, panel discussions and private parties. Aspiring writers will also have an opportunity to discuss and obtain information on self-publishing, marketing and writing fiction.

PageTurner.net and Tricom Publicity, Inc are the corporate sponsors.

This venture is a part of a national effort to promote literacy, reading for pleasure and writing as a career. This is the story of Marie Levant, a great-great granddaughter of Marie Laveau and a medical doctor compelled by unseen forces to relocate from Chicago to her family's native home. This is New Orleans, where the slave-holding past merges with the twenty-first century, a place where women of color are still being abused, raped, and -- even more horrifying -- rendered "un-dead," zombie-like Sleeping Beauties. The Quadroon Balls of yesterday are a present reality and only Marie Levant can untangle the medical mystery.

A smart modern-day heroine, unafraid of her sexuality, Marie Levant extends the Laveau legacy of spiritual empowerment, prophetic vision, and voodoo possession. Voodoo Season is a fresh and original work of fiction that is a magical womanist tale of mystery and power.

Congratulations Essence November Bestsellers

Congratulations PageTurner.net Clients:

FICTION HARDCOVER
#2. Rehearsals are set to begin in November in Nashville, Tennessee, and the play will begin touring in February 2006, premiering in Alabama. Davis has assembled an award-winning lineup for the stage play Marrying Up that is destined to take urban theater to another level. This unique cast features Peoples’ Choice Award nominee, Thea Vidale, star of her own ABC sitcom, “Thea,” featured in a recurring role on the “Drew Carey Show” and guest appearances on “Whoopi,” Ellen” and “Comedy Central;” Kerisse Hutchinson, who plays “Chantal” on the hit ABC soap opera All My Children; Archie Love from the legendary R&B group The BarKays; and hip hop vocalist K-Rob, the next generation of Isleys Brothers. gdavisplays.com is proud to introduce Kim Fleming in her urban theater debut. Kim’s career includes touring as a background vocalist with country superstar Wynonna and her voice is featured on over 200 recordings ranging from Stevie Wonder and Brian McKinght to rockers Bon Jovi and BeBe and CeCe Winans, from gospel’s reigning musical family.

John Forbes, one of the industry’s top musical directors, who worked with Tyler Perry on his first 8 stage play productions as musical director, will now serve as musical director and producer of the soundtrack album for Marrying Up. John has an impressive array of projects to his credit including serving as musical director for Whitney Houston, Jessica Simpson and Rick James as well as composer of the film score for Tyler Perry’s recent #1 box office smash, “Diary Of A Mad Black Woman.” Additionally, John composed music for many TV shows including Tyra Banks’ “America’s Next Top Model,” ESPN, “America’s Most Wanted,” NBA Sports for Fox TV, MTV’s Video Clash, the UPN hit show “Girlfriends,” and contributed arrangements for “The New Jack City” soundtrack. John has also performed on numerous shows including “The David Letterman Show,” “The Tonight Show,” MTV Awards, “Saturday Night Live,” and the CBS Morning Show. According to Garrett Davis, the play’s Producer and Director, “I feel so fortunate to have John Forbes as our musical director, producer of the soundtrack album and a part of our production team. John brings a wealth of experience, talent and successful collaborations to gdavisplays.com and his musical genius will help me to create not just a play, but an experience.”

Nina Foxx, the author of the best-selling novel on which play is based, has been acclaimed as a “veracious storyteller” by BET Books, Nina Foxx’s academic insight into the human psyche allows her to develop sophisticated characters that are as real and as complicated as any member of her readers’ own families. In Marrying Up, Foxx peels back the veneer of her main character, Paris Montague, a determined and self-sufficient woman who parallels one of women’s fiction’s most enduring heroines, Elizabeth Bennett of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. “So many young women find themselves searching for a mate by listing the qualities that are unacceptable to them, instead of the things that are. I wanted this story to make us take a look at the things that should really be at the core of a relationship, such as love and values rather than how much money a potential mate makes. I’m really excited about working with gdavisplays.com.” Garrett Davis is excited about producing Nina Foxx’s first stage play adaptation. “I really admire Nina’s writing style. She is so visual with her characters. Nina’s style draws you into the story which made it easy for me as a playwright to turn this work into an incredible production.”

An ordained minister, Garrett Davis has written ten plays in eleven years that have earned him accolades across the country. Davis’ work in Urban Theater has earned him a Humanitarian Award nomination, and he was labeled as one of the funniest Gospel Playwrights in America by the NAACP. Davis’ latest creations, “If Loving You Is Wrong,” and “Private Chambers” (plays 8 and 9) have solidified his place as one of America’s premier playwrights and producers of Urban Theater. Upon its release in 2003, If Loving You is Wrong sold 10,000 DVDs in 90 days. Private Chambers, the first courtroom based drama for urban theater, will debut the DVD in late 2005.

Artists who have appeared in Garrett Davis’ productions during the last 11 years include Freddie Jackson, Ann Nesby (from the movie “The Fighting Temptations”), Donnie Harper of the New Jersey Mass Choir, singer songwriter Becky White, Blanche McAllister, Luther Barnes, Melvin Williams, Gerald Alston and Blue Lovette of the Manhattans, Anthony McDonald of the group Prophet Jones, Glenn Jones, gospel comedian Sister Cantaloupe, R&B Songstress Cherelle, Dorothy Townes from the Sounds of Blackness, Duranice Pace of the Pace Sisters and Carl Payne form the Martin Lawrence Show.

According to Davis, “I am so blessed to be a part of such an incredible production, from the cast and crew, to the musical direction and the underlying story. I believe that our stage production of Marrying Up create a new benchmark of excellence in urban theater.”

For booking Information, contact:
P. Browne, Esq. The first highly anticipated issue is scheduled to debut in February 2006, coinciding with Black History Month.

Dickey's Storm story arc will present an epic romance, revealing the untold love story of the world's two most popular African American Super Heroes, Ororo (also known as Storm of the X-Men) and T'Challa (a.k.a. The Black Panther), the world's first African American Super Hero. Marking Dickey's first comic book writing effort, the captivating series blends romance and adventure against the backdrop of Africa's cruel plains. Emerging star David Yardin (Black Panther, District X) will illustrate the books.

"I never would have imagined that I'd get an opportunity to step into the Marvel Universe and work on Storm," says Dickey. "She is such a remarkable character. As the story and romance unfold, the duo come together to fight against a mutual foe who seeks to put them in a cage and exploit them toward wicked ends.

"This is a truly groundbreaking storyline that will draw in readers from all cultural backgrounds," said Joe Quesada, Editor-in-Chief of Marvel Comics.
